Planned Events

2010-2011 - Essay Competition for Lithuanian Young Lawyers and Advanced Law Students. On November 16, 2010 LABAS announced the details for an essay competition open to Lithuanians who are young lawyers or advanced law students addressing a current challenge to the rule of law in Lithuania today. The deadline will be March 1, 2011, after which LABAS members will be invited to comment on the submissions, with a winner to be announced by May 30, 2011. Details are at our Essay Contest page.

June 11, 2011 - Annual Membership Meeting. The 2011 Annual Membership meeting will take place on Saturday, June 11 in Cary, Illinois (near Chicago). Details will be mailed directly to current members.

Past Events

2009 Rule of Law Celebration in Vilnius

LABAS, together with legal professional organizations and the Mykolas Romeris University, joined representatives of the Lithuanian legal community to celebrate the rule of law. This one-day program on July 7, 2009 celebrated Lithuania’s resurgence of the Rule of Law since 1991 and its tradition of democratic institutions. Lithuania’s first written statutes were enacted in the 1500s, beginning with the Statutes of 1529, 1566 and 1588. 3.5 MCLE credit was available for attending attorneys from the USA.

November 29, 2008 Conference in Lemont

LABAS hosted a luncheon at the Two Rivers restaurant in Lemont, Illinois on November 29, 2008 with guest, Professor Tadas Klimas, who served as Chief Legal Counsel to the Chairman of Parliament of Lithuania, Dean of Vytautas Magnus School of Law in Kaunas and authored a number of bills in Lithuania among other accomplishments. Professor Klimas is a long-time friend of LABAS, and address the group on current legal issues in Lithuania.

2006 Conference in Vilnius a Success

   On July 25-26, 2006, LABAS, together the Center for Public Affairs at Elon University in North Carolina, USA, and the Lithuanian Lawyers Association (Lietuvos teisininku draugija, or LTD), concluded a successful legal professionals’ conference entitled “Lithuania’s Legal System: Trends and Perspectives.” Our delegation consisted of 30 participants and invited speakers. Together with 90 of our Lithuanian colleagues, we heard the Lithuanian point of view on Lithuania’s progress and concerns regarding its court and legislative system. LABAS is grateful to our host for the conference, the U.S. Embassy, which provided us space at The American Center in Old Town Vilnius.
